Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is to provide a public health education to medical and veterinary medical students and professionals, as well as students and professionals with other disciplinary backgrounds, aimed at improving the health and well-being of populations, communities and individuals. We strive to be a center of excellent public health teaching, augmented by research and service activities in our local and regional communities.

Program Overview

Established in the School of Medicine in 1999, the Graduate Program in Public Health at St. George’s University provides training in the following specialization of public health: Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Policy, Environmental and Occupational Health, and Veterinary Public Health. In addition to the public health core and track-required courses, students have opportunities to take elective courses such as maternal and child health, applied food microbiology, substance abuse and public health, or public health sanitation.

Our faculty and students reflect our global community perspectives and links to other institutions across the world which complement the innovative and cutting-edge academic work across St. George’s University—Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies. Our alumni have become leaders in health and medical practices, international agencies and prominent educational institutions.

Given our international emphasis, on any give day you may find yourself involved in a debate with a professor from Turkey, breaking bread with students from Botswana, or enjoying a game of basketball with classmates from England.

The graduate Public Health degree, a 48-credit program, can be completed within 12 months or up to five years. As noted before, students can specialize in one of the following tracks:

  • Epidemiology Track
  • Health Behavior and Policy Track
  • Environmental/Occupational Health Track
  • Veterinary Public Health

Students can enter the MPH Graduate program at the beginning of each term: Fall, Winter or Spring.
