School of Veterinary Medicine

Scholarships

The University offers a wide variety of institutional scholarships designed to recognize academic excellence and provide access to the best and brightest students regardless of circumstance. In addition to University-Sponsored Scholarships, we have worked to procure unique scholarship opportunities for our students.

Partial tuition scholarships are granted to members of each entering class. Awards for the full cost of attendance are not offered. In order for a student to plan in advance for the financial obligations associated with attending St. George’s University, most applications and awards are made prior to matriculation in the School.

All awards must be used to defray the cost of tuition and are credited directly to the student’s account each term. Most awards are made for Veterinary Terms 1 through 6 only and prorated on the term/academic year schedule.

Financial Aid, in accordance with guidelines set by the school’s Financial Aid Committee, makes the selection of award recipients. Award determinations are based on academic excellence, the degree of the family’s financial need and the availability of funds from SGU as well as each scholarship program’s specified criteria.

A student’s ability to finance his/her education beyond the extent of the financial aid award is also an important selection criterion. Applicants should be aware that the funding is limited, and the quality of the applicants is very competitive. Unfortunately, awards cannot be made to every deserving student.

Applications for each program are listed below each corresponding program description. Applications will be accepted from either applicants or accepted students. Applicants will receive either an award letter or a letter of declination in a timely manner.

Application Deadlines: December 1 for class commencing in January and July 1 for class commencing in August. Students accepted to the University after the scholarship application deadline will have a deadline of the first day of registration. No application will be accepted later than the first day of classes.

Vet Mentor Scholarships

The Veterinary Mentor Scholarship program awards partial-tuition scholarships for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, making a top veterinary education truly affordable. Since January 2003, more than 100 Veterinary Mentor Scholarships totaling close to $2 million USD have been awarded to qualified candidates entering the rewarding career of veterinary medicine. These scholarships are awarded each term as a way of giving back to the veterinary profession that has so generously embraced St. George’s University and its educational mission since we welcomed our first class in August 1999.

Scholarship recipients are nominated by practicing veterinarians who feel his/her protégé has shown academic excellence and has proven commitment to the veterinary medical profession. The veterinary mentor must fill out an application documenting the nominee’s dedication to the profession, detailing a specific instance where the nominee has gone above and beyond the call of his/her duties in the care of animals, demonstrating fortitude, determination, and passion. Should the nominee be chosen for the scholarship, the University will fly the veterinary mentor to Grenada to witness the recipient’s participation in the White Coat Ceremony, which formally welcomes first-term students into the profession.

To be considered for a Veterinary Mentor Scholarship, students must also submit an application for Doctor Veterinary Medicine program.

The Commonwealth-Grenada St. George’s University Scholarship Program

Academically gifted students with limited resources deserve the ability to reach their potential. SGU recognizes this, and that’s why in January 2007 the University launched The Commonwealth-Grenada St. George’s University Scholarship Program (CGSP).

The program includes 75 scholarships; 25 for the Master of Public Health program, 25 for the Master of Business Administration program, 10 for the School of Arts and Sciences, 10 for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, and 5 for the Doctor of Medicine program.   A Commonwealth-Grenada St. George’s University Scholarship Committee established by the University awards the scholarships. To date, 20 scholarships have been awarded to students from eight different Commonwealth countries. While the $4 million (USD) program will fully fund tuition, students will require separate support for living and traveling expenses.

Currently there are 7 Commonwealth-Grenada Scholarships available for eligible students entering the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program.  These scholarships are designed to train veterinary surgeons who will be well equipped to make a significant contribution to the practice of veterinary medicine in disadvantaged Commonwealth countries.

A prospective scholarship candidate must be a resident citizen of a Commonwealth country who has been accepted to St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine. SGU will maintain strict adherence to its admission requirements. Award determinations will be made by the Commonwealth-Grenada St. George’s University Scholarship Committee based primarily on academic excellence, financial need and the student’s commitment to the field of veterinary medicine.

Applicants of the Commonwealth-Grenada scholarship must be accepted to St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine and submit the scholarship application with an essay by the scholarship application deadline.

  • The deadline for the August class is April 15
  • The deadline for the January class is September 15

Commonwealth-Grenada Scholarship candidates must include the following essay with their scholarship application:
Envision yourself at 70 years of age.  Describe the impact this scholarship has made on your life, and the difference that this has made in your community and country.
(500 words)

Scholarship Opportunities for Upperclassmen Students
A prospective Upperclassman award candidate must have completed terms 1 and 2, and have achieved academic excellence. Determinations are made twice yearly after registration in the spring and fall. Awards are for one term only, and students can apply each term. Upperclassman awards are not granted for Terms 7 through 9 in the Veterinary Medicine Program.

The Legacy of Excellence Scholarship
Partial tuition scholarships are awarded to upperclassmen who demonstrate academic excellence. As part of the Morris Alpert Scholarship Fund, the award serves as a fitting tribute to a man whose knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm exemplified our University’s commitment to taking the practice of veterinary medicine to new and unanticipated heights.
In his memory, we seek to nurture and encourage more students of superior academic caliber to strike out and impact the world of medicine in noble and humanitarian ways. These awards are based solely on academic merit and a student’s commitment to his/her School and chosen profession.

Morris Alpert Scholarships
This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Morris Alpert, MD, the first Dean of Kingstown Medical College. Each year, several partial tuition scholarships will be awarded to upperclassmen in terms 3 through 6 who have achieved academic excellence and have participated in extracurricular or community service during their first years of veterinary school. Recipients of these awards must also demonstrate financial need and meet the high moral and ethical standards set by Dr. Alpert for his students during his tenure on the faculty of St. George’s University.

William M. McCord Scholarships
This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of William M. McCord, MD, a leader in the field of medical education in the United States who had a major impact on the development of St. George’s University School of Medicine’s clinical program. These partial tuition scholarships are awarded to students who withdraw from a term due to compelling personal reasons, and when they return to resume their studies suffer undue financial hardships which affect their ability to pay for their education. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
