Cyberspace is a dangerous place. St. George’s University is committed to protecting its information assets and technological resources—and those of the SGU community—from damage or compromise. All of us should become familiar with these security policies and exercise responsibility when conducting the business of the University. We must all aim to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of information while maintaining reliable access to it.
All SGU community members are responsible for the protection of their passwords, card access keys, or other access controls. Don’t share these credentials without proper authorization.
1. Protect your user ID and password - Never give your password to anyone and if you must write it down, put it in a secure place.
2. Never use e-mail to send confidential or sensitive information such as a password, social security number or credit card number. E-mail is just like sending it on a postcard!
3. Don't open e-mail attachments from unknown sources.
4. Don’t store sensitive information in portable devices.
5. Protect your laptop during study trips.
6. Don’t discuss something sensitive in public places. People around you may be listening to your conversation.
7. Ensure sensitive information on the computer screen is not visible to others.
8. Secure your computer whenever you are away from it, such as by using Ctrl-Alt-Del to lock your computer.
9. Always log off of applications after you’ve finished using them.
10. Use up-to-date antivirus software and don’t disable it. Various antivirus software is available for download by SGU University students through our Bradford Network security system. Also ensure that your operating system and other software is up-to-date with patches and security updates.
In order to raise security awareness among the SGU community, the Information Technology Office will promote security through a series of eNewsletters and hand-outs. For detail of the IT Security Awareness program, please go to Computing Policies.
