Computer Recommendations for SGU

The University is moving toward becoming a digital campus. With the introduction of electronic examinations (e-Exams), owning a notebook computer becomes a necessity for students in the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and is recommended for students in the School of Arts and Sciences. In addition to e-Exams, much of the curriculum is already being distributed in electronic format. This will become the norm over the coming year.

Students need to use notebook computers with sufficient resources and power. Please note that while iPads and similar devices can be productive tools, they do not meet the requirements of the university. A notebook computer or equivalent should meet the following minimum specifications:
PC

  • CPU = 2 GHz Pentium III or Industry Equivalent
  • RAM = 2 GB
  • Hard Drive  = 160GB
  • OS = English 32-bit versions of Windows XP, 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 (virtual operating systems will not be supported)
  • Internet Explorer 7.0 or higher
  • CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive
  • 1024x768 resolution display
  • 10/100 Ethernet network adapter
  • 802.11a/b/g wireless network adapter
  • 1 USB port
  • Universal 110-240V power supply

MAC

  • CPU = Intel Processor
  • RAM = 2 GB
  • Hard Drive  = 160GB
  • OS = MAC OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard, Snow Leopard & Lion)
  • CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive
  • 1024x768 resolution display
  • 10/100 Ethernet network adapter
  • 802.11a/b/g wireless network adapter
  • 1 USB port
  • Universal 110-240V power supply

As you bring your personal computer, monitor, or printer to campus, be advised that the electricity available on the island is 220/240volts, 50Hz. Most AC power supply/transformers that come with a notebook computer can accommodate this, but you may have to make arrangements for your desktop computer.

You will be able to connect your computer directly to the Internet via the SGU local area network or via 802.11a/b/g/n wireless. Please refer to the FireFly Zone Map. This map details the current wired and wireless access for each building on the True Blue campus.  The university is currently working to expand wireless access coverage.

Most desktop computers have a switch on the back that will allow you to convert them to 220/240 volts. However, if your computer will only use 110 volts/60 Hz, and you purchase a step-down transformer, the current on Grenada is 50 Hz, and many computers will not tolerate this.

Monitors
Monitors should be rated for 110-240 volts and 50Hz. Refer to the manufacturer's documentation for this information.

Printers
Printers should be rated for 110-240 volts and 50Hz. Refer to the manufacturer's documentation for this information.
