As a member of the SGU community, you will need to access University network resources and systems during your time here. Your network accounts will be the means by which you will have access to the network or online resources.
Each Student at SGU is assigned a unique username/user ID that will be used to authenticate against three major systems throughout the University. However, one can have different passwords at once if the passwords are not synchronized. Whenever possible, the Information Technology Office tries to link and keep your accounts synchronize to allow for password consistency.
Those instances are explained below.
For Returning Students: your username and password will remain the same with respect to your network account and SGU email account
For New Students: Your user ID will be the one mentioned in your welcome email. Please note that all students can also find their user ID as the left most part of their SGU email address (up to, but not including the “@” sign).
Your password to access both the network as well as your email will initially be set to your eight digits birth Date followed by a three character. The birth date is entered in the format of MMDDYYY. The three characters appended to the birth date is Pd# to insure password complexity. Password complexity is instituted to insure account security. To illustrate the password format, please note the following:
The Banner Student Self Service area link can be found on the SGU home page just above the link for the Member center/My SGU. It is labeled “Student Self Service”.
Your Banner account is separate from any other accounts meaning that its password is independent of all other accounts at SGU. Although your username may be the same as your network and email username, these accounts are not related in any way.
Returning Students - Banner Account ONLY:
The password or PIN is only six characters and is initially set to your birth date. The format of the PIN is MMDDYY. To illustrate how to construct your password let’s follow this example:
For new students:
The password or PIN is eight characters and is initially set to your eight digit birth date, followed by three characters. The birth date is entered in the format of MMDDYYYY. The three characters appended to the birth date is Pd#. To illustrate how to construct your password let’s follow this example:
Your logon for Self Service Banner is case sensitive and is represented by all capital letters.
For illustrative purposes, John Smith would logon to his Banner Self Service account with JSMITH (all capital letters)
The size limitation in the Banner system with respect to PIN values prevents us from having a single Password/PIN to manage all three of the accounts at this time. Future versions of the Banner software will expand the capabilities of the PIN so that one User Id / Password combination will be able to manage access to all three secure systems.
In the rare event that you did not furnish the University with your Birth Date you will have to contact the help desk by opening a ticket at http://shor.sgu.edu to request assistance with accessing Banner Self Service
Network (Active Directory)/Email Accounts
The network (AD) and Email accounts work together well. Although technically these are two separate accounts, the same username and password will work for both accounts. If you change one password, it changes both of them.
Your Network (AD) Account provides you access to the following network applications:
Printing Quota: All students received a printing allowance or quota to use on the computer labs printers. The amount you are allotted to print depends on your school affiliation. This amount is calculated per sheet. You can find details of your quota at Computing at SGU
Sonic Foundry: Using Sonic Foundry's Mediasite technology, some course instructors now makes their lectures available via Angel for study and review. Using our Angel course management system, students are able to stream a lecture to their desktops or laptops anytime and anywhere.
SHOR –Self Help Online Resource: Students can submit service request through the SHOR system. The helpdesk system designed to provide students with the ability to report technical issues update and validate ticket status in a real time environment and to generate email update notifications to keep you informed of your ticket status
SGU has provided you with an email account that gives you access to the following applications:
.
Webmail: We encourage all students to use their SGU email account. The University may use your e-mail address to distribute instructions such as: notifications about student accounts, grade reminders, scholarship opportunities and enrolment status.
Sakai Course Management System: Over the course of the Fall 2010 term, St. George’s University will move to a new course management system called Sakai. Sakai was developed as an open source application by a consortium of major academic institutions including Stanford University, the University of Indiana and MIT. As a member of the Sakai community, SGU can take advantage of a vast pool of expertise concerning the use of Sakai and administrative best practices.
The Office of Information Technology will offer Sakai workshops for both faculty and students during the Fall 2010 term. In addition, the Educational Computing Team will provide assistance in course conversion and the use of Sakai and will address any legacy issues related to the migration. Our goal is to have converted our entire catalogue of courses to Sakai for the Spring 2011 term.
Bradford Campus Manager: Before accessing the wireless network, all students have to authenticate and register their computers through Bradford. This process insures that computers on the campus network have the most basic security software to prevent infection from malware and in doing so, help to provide a much more secure network for all.
EZProxy Library Journal: SGU has a handful of Library subscription databases, at present that requires authentication to login. You’ll be asked to enter a username and password when you connect to a database through EZProxy
