Firefly Network Residential Housing Support Policy

With freedom of access to our Firefly network comes the responsibility to be a good network citizen. St. George’s University's Firefly network is available solely for the use of SGU students, faculty, and staff. It is to be used only for University-related activities and in fulfillment of the University mission. Please refer to the  SGU Computer, Network, and Information Systems Access, Control, Use and Security Policy.

What Is Firefly?

Firefly provides both wired and wireless network and Internet access to all SGU students.  To maintain the highest level of service, the Office of Information Technology identifies standard products and configurations, and provides support for Firefly access in all University dormitories.

Installation/Configuration

In order to properly connect to your dorm Internet connection, you must do the following:

  • Ensure that your personal computer meets minimum system recommendations, as found in the Computing at SGU / Specifications Student Owned Computers document.
  • Make sure your computer has an Ethernet network jack available. This may be a built-in port (looks slightly larger than a phone jack), or you may need to install a network interface card (NIC).
  • Obtain a CAT5 patch cable, if you don’t already have one, to connect from your computer’s Ethernet port to the data jack in the wall.
  • All ports in your dorm room are active, so your computer should connect once it’s  plugged in. You should be able to run your Web browser to register your computer on the “Firefly” network. The registration process is self-explanatory, but if you need any assistance, don’t hesitate to contact the Help Desk at extension 2120 or 2519.

How to obtain assistance if your network service is interrupted:

If you experience trouble with the network service after installation, you should call the Help Desk to report the problems. Include as much detail as possible including:

  • Your name
  • Building
  • Floor
  • Room number
  • Date and time you are available for a technician visit
  • A contact number

You may be able to resolve some problems over the phone; otherwise an IT technician will call you to make an appointment to visit your dorm room.

You must be present for an SGU IT technician enter your dorm room. A representative from University Security will also be present.

Service

The Office of Information Technology is responsible only for ensuring that Firefly service is available at the wall jack in your room. However, if the IT support staff determines that your wall jack is working properly but you still can’t access the network, you will be directed to the Help Desk counter for computer repair information and further assistance.

SGU IT technicians will not take your equipment out of your room or provide you with assistance in configuring or repairing your computer in your room. You are responsible for taking the equipment to the Help Desk Counter or another facility for needed repairs or assistance.

Help Desk Counter Support Hours: 8:00 AM. to 5:00 PM AST, Monday through Friday.

Help Desk Phone Support is available at extension 2120 or 2519.
