Kore Liow, MD

Kore Liow
Class of 1993
Malaysia

Dr. Kore Liow has always been interested in medicine, and upon completing his undergraduate studies he explored the possibility of studying in India, Singapore, or Malaysia. His mother learned about St. George’s University through a Penang newspaper and immediately informed her son about the opportunity to study in Grenada. It seemed like a perfect fit so Kore did not have to look any further and immediately applied.

In 1989, Kore was accepted to the School of Medicine program. “I am very satisfied with the scope of the education I’ve received…Our courses were taught by prominent professors from the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom,” Kore commented. “The next two clinical years in the ‘States’ offer students adequate exposure to clinical medicine as practiced in the United States.”

Kore now enjoys a challenging career in neurology as a result of his education. He is a senior epileptologist and is responsible for the establishment of the first Level IV and most advanced epilepsy center for the state of Kansas. He is an active researcher of epilepsy and served as Principal Investigator for over 35 studies funded by the industries, as well as federal agencies like the NIH and the Center for Disease Control (CDC), to investigate the condition of epilepsy and its treatments. Kore has authored more than 40 articles and written book chapters on the topic of epilepsy in Neurology Journal, Archives of Neurology, Seizure: European Journal of Epilepsy and others, and has served as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals. He has served in national advisory roles, on committees, and as faculty for the CDC Epilepsy Program, American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society, and the Epilepsy Foundation. He is a frequently invited presenter at national and international medical meetings. His research is focused on developing better epilepsy treatments, epidemiology of epilepsy, understanding the disparities in epilepsy care, and improving care and access to epilepsy patients.

Dr. Kore Liow is proud to be among a number of medical students from Malaysia who have successfully completed their education at St. George’s University School of Medicine. He advises potential students, “International students should feel free to explore St. George’s University.” He traveled halfway around the world to study medicine and his adventure has made him the doctor he is today!
